Obviously, you always hope to just show up and the magic will take over, and before you know it, you’re going platinum. Sure, spontaneous magic can definitely happen in the recording studio — but in my experience, it’s almost always facilitated by being above-and-beyond prepared for what you’re going to do.
Every time the cycle repeats, that low E root is right there to support that downbeat. Notice that it doesn’t have to hit every downbeat of the pattern, but it must hit on that repeated downbeat at the start of the cycle. Funky bass lines emphasize beat one and lay a solid rhythmic foundation.
The White Stripes was chaos organized. Their songs may not all sound the same, but they are all rooted in blues-influenced rock ‘n’ roll. The consistency of their color scheme told both their core audience as well as new fans: “We may go crazy and be a little off the rails, but we’re rooted in something familiar to all of us.”

The Dorian mode is commonly used to solo over minor 7th chords, applicable to the ubiquitous II–7 V7 I progression, and a creative substitute, or expansion, of the minor pentatonic scale used in blues and rock. (This article assumes a basic understanding of the theoretical fundamentals of scale modes. Rock ‘n’ roll is a wide genre of music that incorporates a ton of different sound imprints. My advice may seem a bit broad, but ultimately you’re always free to try things and see what works for you! Let’s just say, in terms of the sound you’re going for, you’re playing in a band that does classic covers and original songs in the same set. If you’re playing some classic guitar lines, perhaps switching between rhythm and lead guitar, you need an amp that can handle those differences with an all-around good tone.

By paying close attention to your playing and constantly giving yourself feedback, you can focus in on the moments that give you the most trouble and work at those specifically. One additional way to give yourself feedback might be to record yourself. If I record myself playing my Errol Garner tune, I can even compare it to the original, and make notes about the spots where I’m not quite getting it right!
You can listen to Terminal on Bandcamp, and he’s also worth reading: “When people talk to me, whether it be the press or peers in the scene I operate in, I am often approached with a preconceived notion of pretty much everything from my influences and taste to my politics and lifestyle, solely based on my nationality. It is a caricature that has proven very marketable, one that makes for a more interesting read/conversation/booking, apparently, than a multi-faceted (hence unique) human personality just like each and every one of us.”
Dewsberry’s project is to finance the audio and video recording of a live concert in which she’ll debut 16 songs her friends have written for her 60th birthday. It’s commemorative and community-oriented, and it plays with the concept of a Sweet 16 — only fast-forwarded to age 60.
